Dr Kathleen Owen Donovan 1931 - 2014

(submitted by Dr. Michael Payne)

I knew Kath for many years, first meeting her when I went to PNG in 1972 to do a short term missionary dentistry tour of  three weeks, the first of 11 trips, mostly yearly from then on. Like Margaret Payne (no relation but I’d happily claim her), I found the equipment and facilities were terribly in short supply, yet Kath did a magnificent job. I remember that air mail envelopes were used as autoclave bags, the wards were bush structures, with no electricity, no running water and fires up the middle of the building for the relatives to cook for the patients. She delivered something like 3300 babies at Balimo in that 17 years and never lost a mother! Amazing and a blessing from the Lord indeed. She and I worked for years together, I as chairman and she as secretary of the Mission in NSW, and we had a wonderful partnership. I have enormous gratitude to the Lord for knowing her, a true servant of His.
